    where to go? Family style...

I was just informed by my wife that she would like to take me camping for my birthday( 6-9 ). I do not have the rigs to go all hammocks for our brood and I am not sure my soon to be 3 year old would stay put in one. So it may be a mixed group or just the four of us in one tent( i know its a dirty word).

I live in the Charlotte area. So my questions is where is there somewhere within 3 hours or so that is cool for the whole family. My wife has suggested someplace on the beach, but demands at least bathrooms and access to showers.

As this would be our first full family trip i would say we will lean towards partial camping then full roughing it. In other words a pool, maybe a cabin, recreation and so on. I wont rule out closer to roughing it. So let me say thanks to all in advance.

Happy birthday miyanc! I had a great experience at the KOA in Wilmington. Very family friendly, great little pool, showers were clean, free wifi. Very near to the ocean, enough trees to hang from and ground to tent on. would be a good starter campsite perhaps for your wife. I was traveling solo as a woman and found it to be a great option, very safe with amenities!

Near Charleston SC is the James Island County Park.... Fun for the kids and nice facilities. They also had a shuttle to the beach. Pricey for camping but hey it has a water park.

One more... Devils Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee in upstate SC.
It has camping - we recently used their walk-in camping area. Or traditional state park pads. Or they rent cabins.
There is a small beach, and you can rent kayaks / canoes. My brother in law took his 3 yr old out with him.

this one looks great. wish you could maybe to the cabin, but only weekly rates. So far i like this one the best. I also love Charleston so that's a plus.

James Island park looks perfect. I was all set...but its booked. I am on the waiting list and may still take a primitive site, but they DO NOT ALLOW HAMMOCKS!!!!!!!!! wtf..... It wont deter me although I could have worked my wife into a hammock and maybe more hammock trips. I am still looking for now.

I did find that NC has a Hammock Beach???? state park. No showers or bathrooms so that's out. I wonder what there hammock policy is?
