I started saying cooben (Latin pronounciation) around Ultralite Luke and the Ohio guys, Luke thought it was funny and started saying it at work around the HG gang and they all thought it was so funny it caught on there for a while too.

I guess when you're spending that kind of money on gear, it's good to make fun of yourself a little.

    How to say it...

I have worked with a bit with this material and we pronounce it: (CUE ben). Like a Cue ball.

However, when discussing "Cue"ben fiber, as it relates to the material we use in the camping world, WV is right. It should be termed CTF3 as this informational page from Cubic Technology states..

    CTF3 products

    and yeah, "Muhn-eee" works too.....

EDIT: You know we love you Bannerstone. Thanks for the laughs. FireInMyBones says it funny too. We like him as well!

He's the one I heard say it Coo-ben. Of course, he's my only hanger friend who actually has a cuben tarp, so who am I to question his pronunciation!?!

Well, Wikipedia says, "The name Cuben Fiber was coined by the press in reference to America³ (pronounced America Cubed), the winner of the 1992 America's Cup."

Nobody was calling that racing yacht "America Coobed." Well, except Ricky Ricardo.

It was my best guess. It might have had something to do with that video of some South American explorer on here doing a video review, "El Coo-ban-o el tarpo."

I am going to try making some tarps soon, but I WON'T be practicing on any COO-ben material! That would be an expensive mistake if I messed up! Hey, wouldn't it be a clash to have an UL tarp with my super-non-UL hammock!?!
