I've tried this a couple of times and just skipped the dedicated dogbones or straps with grommets. I keep a long section of guy line on my tieouts anyway. It's pretty easy to lark's head or clove hitch the guy line to the end of these poles. Depending on the angle of the tarp sides, length of the poles, etc you might have a problem with the lines sliding off the ends of the poles. In that case, take the free ends of the lines, pull them together at the ridgeline, and tie them together. This keeps the system from pulling apart.

It's not the fastest setup that way but I'm willing to do quite a bit of tinkering to pull out the sides when I'm using my bridge.

Ordered my polls and such from Quest. Now, I watching dog bone videos.

Can someone tell me the best sizes for the fixed loops on the dog bones?

    Thanks.

I just made 6" continuous loops. I don't think dogbones are worth the labor for something like this. Splicing is addicting though, so I understand why people do it. HYOH, eh.

I think I did 1" circumference. I wanted it to be snug around the pole tip. The other end I did larger because it was just going to be larks headed(?) through the tarp tie-outs so size didn't matter much.

Nice. I'm going to use CRL since I suck as center without one and it'll keep the poles off the tarp. That makes me nervous. And I'll use dog ones. Didn't want to mess with grommets and what not.

I just made ghetto dog bones, I about a 5-6" pieces of paracord with an overhand knot on each end. They self tighten and have never come loose.

    Just finished my pole mod
DIYed some poles from China (eBay) / homemade dogbones (supplies from Dutchware)
Poles are 54.5" (fold down to 12.5") / Dogbones are 10" as they go over my CRL

    It is now positively palatial

And for if I have to go to ground and use as ground dwelling tarp, I just put a small knot in the dogbones to reduce the length (No CRL to go over)
The poles that I use at each end to create the A-frame are the same poles I use for the porch mode so no extra weight.

So all in all super happy as it works as planned and I learnt a few more DIY skills along the way
All the gear and no idea.....

    Question

    There was an earlier ( : like waaaaay earlier years ago ; ) post cautioning about being careful if trying to use this pole mod with a turtle stand. Here is my Q and wondering what your thoughts are;

Here is an image from the TATO gear site showing a TATO stand kit and WB RR. The ridge pole is about 6' above the ground. I'm thinking there is about two feet below the RP to the top of the WB RR. Not knowing the deminsions of things, i'm thinking there should be enough space below the RP for the outer pole mod and SF below that?

    What say ye?

    THX in advance,
    Thom

Thumbs up WB Superfly with easy to find pole kits

    Greetings,
Yesterday was a test hang for my wife's new WB RR. We utilized DIY stands nearly every trip out last season with her Hennessy and my WB BB. This season we are testing out the TATO stand kit. Since we saw a break in the rain we set up one of the TATO stands and her RR. Worked great on the ~13ft ridgepole. We then put up the Superfly and inspired by this thread grabbed some extra ~3/8" fiberglass poles we had from a standard pole kit purchased at a Sportsman's Warehouse.

There was no mod or line needed in our case as we simply ran each of two poles (3 sections of ~24"~) through opposite side pull out loops. The tension kept them in place fine. We will be doing the DIY stretch tube guy lines today so the corner guy outs will be better set in real use next test.

Here is a shot. As a side note my wife sold her Hennessy expedition last month as she wanted to try the RR she'd read such good reviews on. And while she's not slept in it, the initial lay was amazing she said : )

    Happy wife, Happy life.

    Happy hangin'
    Thom
PS I will use the our second TATO + SF set up w/my WB BB
