Ricketts Glen, PA - 22 Waterfalls

Made a trip to north central Pennsylvania to visit Ricketts Glen State Park.
    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=58411

Mixed in a college trip for one nephew and hauled a couple of the younger ones along for the ride, along with their parents.

Weather was forecast to be variable, rain, wind, sun, cool evenings and as with any time in the mountains, it could be all of the above.

We were blessed with great weather, only a bit of rain and plenty of heat on the last day but the hike along the waterfalls provided all the relief needed. That combined with no cell coverage, no WiFi and therefor no electronic distractions for the kids, makes this a real treat. The campground is located near a large lake, beach available. Pets and hammock hanging allowed.

Should you have the oppurtunity, this is a don't miss hike/campground in Pennsylvania.

The trip started off with a little HF magic when Yooz85 and Baxter dropped by the site for a visit and to help feed my stovie addiction.

The kids where able to meet s fellow hammocker and learn their "crazy uncle" is not alone. Yooz shared some great tips for hiking different trails that made a world of difference of the next several days and ensured a memory filled trek for the younger kids. (6 & 11yrs old) a special shout out for letting us know about the "short trail" to the waterfalls by way of the Midway Crevasse. The kids had a ball climbing the rocks and checking out the squeezes.

After a fair amount of time talking hiking, hammocking, stoves and trail routes, Yooz and Baxter hit the trail and it was time to finish up the base camp for the ground pounders. Two 8 man tents and a screened room over the picnic table required just as much time as it sounds like. Meanwhile, my High School Junior aged nephew rigged his ENO doublnest & bugnet in about 10 minutes. Yeah, he's a convert now, more on that in a minute.

We had a great trip, spent the evenings practicing fire making/building skills. The mornings working alcohol stove cooking and the days fishing and hiking. We only made a few of the 22 waterfalls due to some of the kids starting to battle the onset of illness but there was no mistaking their awe and wonder at the sheer beauty of the larger waterfalls. During one video session they were literally speechless.

When it finally came time to break camp, our hammock camps were broken down in the 10 minutes it took for the beans in the heuvos rancheros to rehydrate. Two hours after breakfast the ground pounders were almost ready.

If you are wondering if that made any kind of impression, I had to order 12 tablecloths last night while the 20% sale was still on at tableclothsfactory.com . How funny is that?

The youngest was unhappy with his old net hammock, he fell out in about 30 seconds.

He did eventually convince his sister to share and now has ordered his own tablecloth to be made into a hammock. Yep, one by one they are converting...

Like I said, this place is not to be missed.

The campground has plenty of hammocking friendly camp sites but NOT all have trees to make it work. We scouted the sites before leaving and I did take some video so we are working on a list.

The Ranger and staff were very friendly, no isssues with the hammocks hanging along the edge of the site. Firewood is scarce, they do sell small bundles for $7.

The hiking can be pretty challenging here and there, check the trail maps, if it is a black trail, figure on lots of stairs followed by up and down. Worth every step but as the youngest would and did say to a few hikers, " better get your leg on!"

If you are wondering how much these folks were influenced by the ease and comfort of the hammocks my nephew and I used during the trip....

Here is my tablecloth order from last night at 11:42pm, 18 minutes before the sale ended.
Yeah, a hammock for everyone of them and their cousins...and at this very moment, my brother in law is watching youtube videos of you guys sewing hammocks and laughing to the Shug video.

That is great!! More converts! We're taking over the world, one hammock at a time. Looks like a great place to hike as well. Thanks for the trip report.

Thanks for sharing the trip. This was one of our family's favorite hiking spots when we lived in Pennsylvania! Brings back a lot a good memories!
