Wow what a story, old4hats. Glad you all are OK. But sorry to hear a bear in that area has associated campsite with food and isn't afraid of people.

Bobbin Tension - A Personal Viewpoint
People leaving food out and being careless with their trash and such is creating more and more habituated bears in the area, be it either just human habituated or food habituated, they stop paying attention to us as a threat and start associating everything in a camp site with food and yummy snacks. Even though most backwoods camping I do is in Arkansas, I still carry a can of spray with me regardless. Better for me to spray it than shoot it dead because other folks inability to properly maintain their site.
It's too bad because it sounds like the bears are making the rounds doing what they usually do. I can't imagine it'll end well for the bears. I hope no people get hurt in the process.

That's an experience I would prefer not to have. Glad you survived.
Wow. Glad to hear both Chigger and you got out okay, old4hats!
I've never met an habituated bear, but that sure is a scary thought. Did you report it to the ranger station responsible for that area? They may be able to do something to prevent someone from getting hurt (either moving the bear, or, less humanely, removing the bear).
Either way, I'm glad that you're okay and that the brats made it out just fine . Hope this doesn't put you off of getting out into the back country again.
