    Ex-ground dwellers in a 5-way hang

Hi all. Thanks for all the great info. Got a sewing machine and got to work. Wanted to share my recent successes.

I finished my 10X12 1.1 silnylon tarp and modified tree-huggers using ring and bar. Still workin' on the gearskins and skeeter nets. Goin' to outfit the whole fam for some ultralight through the cascades.

Wow. Five hammocks under one tarp. That's really impressive. Talk about a close family!

Those are awesome! Nice that the whole family is involved. I don't have the sewing (or many other) skills so I think that's extra cool. Where in Hillsboritto are you?

Yeah- that's the intention. We're goin' to head up to Eagle Creek in couple of weeks in the Gorge. That will be our first hang other than in the yard.

Wambo- I didn't have any sewing skills either up until about 3 weeks ago. I got a 40 year old machine off Craigslist for $25. Put a little elbow grease into repairs (but no parts thankfully) and started trying. I still can't sew straight but stuff seams to hold. Ha ..get it!!! Seams to hold. That's funny stuff.

O, btw, we're just outside of downtown.

No-one commented on my tree-huggers. They're super easy to setup with bar on one end and the hammock never touches the ground. Plus, they only require one of the rings instead of 3 with no carabiner. Lighter weight and cheaper than the ring buckle system. I adjust by pulling the ring further and further around the tree until the hammock is situated under the tarp on both sides. I thought that was a novel idea as I hadn't seen them on here. Oh well..enough tooting my own horn.

Beautiful trail. Watch your car. Lowlifes have broken into cars at that trailhead in the past.

    Whoooo Buddy!!

Way to bring it on and make an entrance! I love that "get on it" attitude......
I need to know more or see another pic or two of the tree hugger/bar set-up.
    Brilliant rig......

    Thanks Shug.

In the attached picture you can make out a single ring on the tree. If I needed the hammock to move to the left, I'd let out some slack by moving the ring to the left, around to the front of the tree. If I needed the hammock to the right, I'd move the ring further around the backside of the tree. This means the strap is always off center of the tree. Not sure if that might turn out to be a disadvantage at some point or not but it really increases the gripping strength as all of the tree circumference is 'gripped'. The bar on the other end of the strap is attached to the hammock via a rope loop (double -fisherman's knot) that goes through the hammock ends. The loop uses a larks head around the bar.

I'm curious how you finished the ends of the hammock. I've just been doing the whipping, but it doesn't seem to hold my edges taught. Mind if I ask for a description and pics?

Also, how are you keeping warm in those?

    thanks

    That's awesome!

If you run a separate rope for a ridgeline underneath the tarp you'll probably get better coverage over the ends of the hammock(s) and you'll probably be able to get a tighter pitch as well. Just an idea, but that rig is seriously cool.
