When do you call it quits?

This is mostly for the deep south folks.
At what point in the summer do you decide you are done and its just too hot to camp?
One of the main reasons I fell into hammock camping was to extend my season deeper into the summer and I feel like I could possible go all summer in some of the cooler spots (for me north west Alabama and north east Georgia).

When I have to put a wet towel on me in the hammock to stay cool so I can sleep, I'm done for the summer. Actually before it gets to that point.

During the hotter months I like to go high on the ridge tops to catch the breezes or hang out in the the river and stream banks to enjoy the shade and cool water.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

Re: When do you call it quits?

If there is a lake or stream nearby to keep cool in, I can't see stopping much. It usually gets cooler at night. August is our hottest month, so not a popular time for group hangs. As for hanging in the yard, a drop cord run with a fan will help considerably. You learn in the south that water to play in, shade, a fan and a cold drink go a LONG way in keeping cool in the summer. Also, the more you are outside, the more your body gets acclimated to the heat. Sitting in 70° a/c and then going out into 95° heat is way worse than if you have been outside since morning and the temp gradually increased.

I agree on the getting acclimated I used to hide from the outdoors in July and August but then I started working 12 hr days in Southern Louisiana in during the hottest parts of the summer. I can't tell you what I was doing but the original event took place from April to July of 2010. Since then I really don't fell the heat when I am awake but I still like to be cool when I sleep. I have tent camped in the keys around June - July I figured a using a hammock in Alabama I would never get that hot.

110+ with 100% humidity, maybe? I don't know. I've yet to find a temperature that I'm unwilling to go out into, given proper precautions for dehydration and heat illness.

When do you call it quits?

I'm done by the end of April in Florida and don't begin again until October/November. If I hike in the summer, I'm traveling to New England, which I often do.

No exact limit but sometime in May the woods become less fun regardless of temperature as all the plants spring up and rather than explore between the trees, you're suddenly wading in between them if not on a trail.

Then the ticks start to become a problem and you feel like you have to be on guard the whole time, and then the biting insects start attacking from above. Once its hot outside I do NOT want to wear shoes and barefoot isn't always a good idea. Flip flops through heavy leave litter or mud is not a good idea.

Then the spring/summer storms start and almost every day has a chance for severe weather which isn't a plan killer in and of itself, but its often the last straw. When there is a streak of sunshine in the forecast, its often because of a heat wave rolling in with it and you REALLY don't want to be out them.

Canoeing can be fun this time of year. You get wet and cool down and the bugs don't bother you much on the water, but sleeping all hot and sticky is not my idea of fun.

When the hammock is getting wet from sweat dripping off me it's not too much fun.

I'm with Mike down here in Florida. But we're leaving out Saturday for Maine and I plan on spending the entire 3 months hanging outside.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
