This weekend I took my daughter on her first backpacking trip. We’ve camped many times before, but this was her first backpacking trip where she had to carry all of her own gear. We had a complete blast!
It was also the first time I got a chance to use my new Hammock Gear Winter Palace out in the field, all glorious 12 feet of her. I just love it!
I didn’t tell my daughter that I bought a new tarp and didn’t mention it at all prior to setting it up. Completely unprompted, she exclaimed, “Daddy, this thing is like a palace! It’s soooo much bigger than the silly-nylon one you made.”
“Well, Sweetheart, it’s funny that you call it a palace. This tarp is actually called the Winter Palace and it’s made out of cuben fiber.”
“What’s cuben fiber, Daddy? Some type of seaweed?”
“Ha! Dear, it may look and feel like seaweed, but cuben fiber is the latest and greatest in lightweight tarp material. It’s the lighted and strongest tarp money can buy. It’s actually camoflauge color – see the woodsy pattern in the tarp? And it was custom made for us right here in the USA by a company with the best darn customer service this end of the Milky Way - and possibly beyond. And it’s ridiculously light for its size. The tarp weighs only 11.2 ounces. The whole setup, with stuff sack cordage, stakes and all, weighs less than my homemade tarp that’s half the size. You and I, young lady, are among the privileged few that get sleep under such an extraordinary piece of equipment.”
And sleep well we did. We had such a good time on the trip and I loved spending time with my girl, just the two of us. I’m biased, of course, but I have to say that my daughter is absolutely the bomb. And so is the HG Winter Palace. They are both perfect in every possible respect.
We can’t wait for our next opportunity to head out in the woods.
Thanks for reading.
