In conjunction with Grizz & Shoty9, there are great circuits in the old rag area. REI has a cheap circuits book for the Shenandoah Nat. Park & map #10 has that area really nailed down. Avoid Old Rag if ya want solitude. I enjoy the Nicholson Hollow Trail or Corbin Mtn. trail with a short stay on Robertson Mtn.... All a short distance from the AT. You could easily hop on and off and not retrace your steps.
I would recommend taking a look out in the GW National Forest.. Lots of places to Hike there, and can even pike up some of the Tuscarora. Further South, there are some sizable loops not far from the Ramsey's Draft Wilderness. Good idea to research the trails a bit though, some which show on maps are no longer maintained.. we had an exciting but exhausting bush whack to make a connection a few weeks back. Most of the larger and longer trails (read: anything with a blaze) are well maintained though.
Prince William forest park is a half hour south from d.c.
Shenendoah is not far either

if your legs are up for it you can do a nice two day circut in SNP by hiking down Swift Creek Run and up White Oak Canyon. did it this weekend with KRShome and it was a leg burner but great views and plenty of water. Only camping is down at the base of White oak but plenty of woods. and by leg burner i mean 5miles down hill and 5 miles up with 3k feet of elevation change.

I researched a bit and you could leave your car in the train parking lot at Harpers Ferry, take the MARC train to Point of Rocks and then walk back to your car.
14 miles. Camp at Brunswick, MD at the Family Campground and take a canoe or kayak trip.
Just an idea.

Dolly sods is great, but beware of the blowdown. Trees everywhere on the trails, but still a pretty nice spot.
Our backpacking group is doing trail maintenance in the Sods in 2 weeks, so should have a significant amount of blowdown cleared on the Red Creek Trail. I heard that the northern section is okay, but that Dunkenbarger is BAD!
