I just did a 22-mile overnight trip on the Tully Trail in North Central Mass with two friends, Doug (left) and Janet (right) from the New England Over 40 Hiking Group on Meetup.com. The Tully trail circles a large Army Corps of Engineers flood control impoundment on the Tully River and its many tributaries. This shot was taken at the summit of Tully Mountain about 2 miles into the hike.
A large rainstorm moved through the area the night before our hike, dumping 3-4 inches of rain on the region. Fortunately, for us, the rain ended just before we started our hike and we had nice weather for the duration of the trip. Although, we did run into some soggy trail segments.
We saw lots of salamanders.
And some colorful fungi.
After 14 miles, we finally reached the only designated campsite on the trail, where I hung my hammock.
The following day we hiked 9 miles back to our vehicles. We passed three waterfalls, Royalston Falls, Spirit Falls, and Doanes Falls shown here.
It was a great trip. These photos are only a small sample of the interesting things we saw along the way. If you're looking for a nice overnight in hike in North Central Massachusetts and you don't mind hiking long distances, you can't go wrong with the Tully Trail.
