    Hammocks in Australia/New Zealand?

    I just finished a 1,000 mile section of the AT and fell in love with the idea of hammocks. I really envied the site flexibility hammockers had while I often struggled to find suitable areas to tent outside of shelter spots and designated sites. However, I am moving to Melbourne, Australia soon and am wondering about the suitability of hammocks in that area.

    Hammocks are ideally suited to the eastern US, but does anyone have thoughts on how well they're suited to Australia, especially Victoria, and perhaps New Zealand (there's obviously a lot of alpine areas in New Zealand - is it worth it to try to hammock)? Are the parks there ok with hammocks?

    Can't speak to the specifics but there are a lot of folks in OZ using hammocks to camp....far more than are members here on the forums.

    I am sure some of the southern hemisphere folks will chime in with details.

    Still hoping for some input. I'm looking at the Warbonnet Blackbird or Hennessy Hyperlite and they both have some lead times on their orders and I'm moving in a month, so I've got to make a move soon if I'm going to avoid intl shipping charges.

    G'day Bobsled,

    Hammock's seem to slowly becoming more popular over here. It is a big country with lots of trees . You would have no problems finding somewhere to hang in Victoria, or any of the other states. Obviously though there are places where trees are sparse e.g the deserts . Just be careful which trees you hang from, some of the river gums around Victoria have a reputation for dropping big branches.

    I have only been to NZ once and again there were plenty of trees where I was , but why go to NZ when you can come to Tasmania .

    Hammocks in Australia/New Zealand?

    As an Australian hammocker I can testify you won't have a problem (except in the desert regions).

    Hammocks in Australia/New Zealand?

    @Bobsled
    Hi,
    I grew up in Melbourne; from 4-28 yo and now live in Brisbane. Anyway, it's true to say that Melbourne and the State of Victoria is indeed Hammock Heaven. There are so many diverse and unique environments to explore. If anything you are really spoilt for choice. Close by you have the 'Dandenongs' mountain range and the Yarra Valley. Further afield you have World Class National Parks like the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians, the Victorian High Country, Wilsons Promentory. You can do one of the worlds great canoe trips down the Mighty Murray River, The Snowies, Eildon Weir, Lakes Entrance.............
    And I haven't scratched the surface of all the places to see. These are just the main well known tourist spots that you can easily Google.
    Have no fear, if you seek unbelievably stunning country, you will not be disappointed.
    If you get a chance to go visit Tassie- well you'll take your adventure another few pegs up the ladder. You would literally need several lifetimes to see it all....

    I just finished up a trip in New Zealand using a hammock most nights. There are some rules on camping close to some of the major hiking/tramping tracks (designated sites, one which asked you not to camp under trees due to treefall risk which was a bit problematic) but in general as long as you're respectful and don't cause damage I don't think hanging is a problem.
