The tie outs are part of the hammock - the attachment points with cord that get staked to the ground to hold the sides out (and give the asymmetric shape). You aren't required to use them, but they do help keep the bugnet off of your face and reduce the swinging motion of the hammock.

Donna here...It has been my experience...the Hennessy label on one of the tieouts is on the right side. Therefore the zipper is on your right.
