Slnylon vs coated ripstop? Both 70d?

I a wanting to make another tarp but not mess with the waterproofing it my self. I'm confused at the differences between silnylon and coated ripstop. Would I be completely dry either fabric I decided to pick? And btw what's the 70d mean on different fabrics? THANKS!

    30d is 1.1 ounce, 70d is 1.9 ounce.
I think silnylon would repel water a little better.
Scott at DIYGearSupply has silnylon in stock.

There's 2 aspects to what you're asking, I think. The weight of the fabric (regardless of the coating) is referred to as the denier, which is rather complicated, but suffice to say, the higher the number, the heavier the fabric. There's 10d fabrics out there, and there's 1200d fabrics. 70d fabric often weighs around 1.9 ounces/square yard, and 30d fabric often weighs somewhere close to 1.1 ounces/square yard.

One thing to note is that I have said the weight that is often in the description online, or on the roll or whatever is PRE-COATING, which is to say 70d uncoated fabric will usually weigh right around 1.9 ounces/sq. yd., but coated 70d fabric will weigh more (sometimes a lot more).

The coating is the other aspect that contributes to fabric weight. There's a lot of different coatings, silicone being one of them. Some coatings make the fabric waterproof, while some only make it water resistant. Poly-urethane (PU), urethane, and silicone are the common waterproofing coatings, with silicone being the lightest typically. The most common water resistant coating is called DWR (durable water repellent). the DWR treatment can be light or heavy, and makes the fabric more or less water resistant (and adds more or less weight).

That's the quick basics of coatings, I think. There's lots and lots more to it than just that, but that should get you started.

    Hope that helps,
    PF

Re: Slnylon vs coated ripstop? Both 70d?

Another thing to consider is that in silnylon the silicon is impregnated in the fibres and increases the strength of the material, a coating is just that and will have less of an effect on the material strength.

Oh wow that's crazy a lot to it! So is like say 30d going to hold less weight then say 70d ripstop nylon would? I ordered some 70d coated ripstop nylon with something like pu coating? (I'm hoping this is waterproof coating) so am I understanding this right that like 30d is lighter weight but less strong then say 70d which is stronger but a bit more weight?

That's pretty close to true. Generally speaking, if the material and weave are the same, 70d fabric will be heavier and tougher (read: "has a higher breaking strength") than 30d fabric.

Note that, for a tarp, you don't need super strength. 30d nylon is plenty to stand up to the majority of the conditions in which you're likely to use a tarp.

    Hope it helps!
