Whipping method - how long does it last?

Hello all, I'm curious as to how long different types of cordage lasts when used for whipping hammock ends. I have always used the channeled end hammocks until recently. I found I really liked the adjustability of the lay by how it was rolled and whipped. My current setup is my 11 foot double layer with whipped ends. I did the whipping with 550 cord. I plan on using this setup all winter here in Iowa so it will be exposed to some pretty rough winter weather at times. What is everyone's opinion in what cordage to use for this? Is one better than another? Amsteel? Zip tie? Really wondering what will be the most durable and what will last the longest. Thank you much!

There is very little wear on the whipping. I would say just about any cordage would work well. If you are happy with how the 550 is working out, I say go with it.

^This...it has little wear, little stress and is under the tarp in bad weather. It will probably outlast the hammock body.

    interesting Q

i wonder if the UV wouldn't be more of a foe, than the actual material, itself?

    just a ponderment

UV and wear and tear from use are probably the two major hammock killers. If I had it the way I wanted it with 550 cord I would stop there.
    YMMV

I was going to mention UV and then decided that if left in the sun full time, the ripstop nylon would be destroyed long before and whipping material. What you use is really a non issue. It could even be removed in most cases after the suspension is larks headed on.

I have had my 550 whipping on my DIY Greenbean hammock since 2007. Still looking good.
