    Howdy from the desert

I finally got a chance to give hammock-camping a serious try this past week, and I think I'm hooked. I've decided need a bigger hammock than the little Grand Trunk I have, and I need an underquilt or a pocket for my air pad, and I'd like to get into a set of whoopie slings or something a little more backpacking friendly than the set of cam-buckle load straps I have now , but other than that I'm good to go.

Anyway, I've been browsing the forum looking at hammock construction ideas because the one I have pinches my shoulders and won't let me get completely flat, and I thought I'd say hi while I'm at it. Thanks for the forum!

I'm guessing you have the Grand Trunk Ultralight. I've owned a couple of them. They are on the small side. They are also made out of polyester. To me a poly hammock just isn't comfortable at all. It doesn't stretch very much at all. In my opinion, nylon is the way to go.

Welcome to the addiction! We have meetings on Tuesday nights at 7.

I bought the warbonet black bird fro my first hammock and love it. You can also make your own. There is a lot of info here for DIY.

Welcome aloft from SC. I recommend you go to a local hang and check out all the hammocks and gear there to find what suits you best. Good luck in your next hammock purchase.

That's my plan. I've got a 132x90 tablecloth on the way to prototype with, and once I've cut it down to dimensions I like I'll decide if it's good enough or if I need to switch to silnylon or something.

Is there a preferred way to finish the ends? I see some using the spiral whip I remember from my boy scout days, and then some are passing a string through a hemmed channel and wrapping that around, is one better than the other?

Welcome to the good life! I take it you are from Utah, so hello from another Utahn! (And if you're not from Utah, hello all the same). If you decide to buy there are so many good vendors here on the forum, you can't go wrong with any of them! My favorite hammock is from BIAS, hope to see you at a hang sometime soon!

I am in Utah, good guess . I was just looking at the trip report from the last hang, swinging in hammocks and getting laughed at by fish sounds like a good time.
