    Hey steelwolf,

Check your guidelines to safe scouting book. They have a section on what is considered safe stoves. It basically says no home made alky stoves can be used. Scouts can purchase commercially made alky stoves but BSA still frowns on akly as a approved fuel. I think it is because you cannot see the flame in direct sunlight and the ability to get burned from it. Discovered that a few years ago when I was doing a demo and it was pointed out to me. Looked it up and sure nuff there it was.

Have fun with your Chuck cooking kit!

I can clarify the Scouting Question further. Liquid fuel stoves are not permitted for use in scouting. The same holds true for wood burning stoves. The preferred method is to use stoves similar to pocket rockets.

That's not true. People spread a lot of miss/half truths about the G2SS. (Stoves and wood tools being the big offenders) Alcohol stoves and wood burning stoves are permitted. I have included an excerpt from the G2SS. Wood stoves are not even mentioned and HOMEMADE alcohol stoves are prohibited. Alcohol as a fuel is discouraged, but not prohibited. There are commercial marine stoves that use alcohol fuel, as well as triangia, evernew, etc.

    Definitions
Chemical fuels—Liquid, gaseous, or gelled fuels.

Approved chemical-fueled equipment—Commercially manufactured equipment, including stoves, grills, burners, heaters, and lanterns that are designed to be used with chemical fuels.

Prohibited chemical-fueled equipment—Equipment that is handcrafted, homemade, modified, or installed beyond the manufacturer’s stated design limitations or use. Examples include alcohol-burning “can” stoves, smudge pots, improperly installed heaters, and propane burners with their regulators removed.

Recommended chemical fuels—White gas (Coleman fuel); kerosene; liquefied petroleum gas fuels, including propane, butane, and isobutane; vegetable oil fuels; biodiesel fuel; and commercially prepared gelled-alcohol fuel in original containers.

Chemical fuels not recommended—Unleaded gasoline; liquid alcohol fuels, including isopropyl alcohol, denatured ethyl alcohol, and ethanol; and other flammable chemicals that are not in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions for chemical-fueled equipment.

Then it's a Council by Council decision. Within our council they are prohibited.
