Yes, this was a fine, authentic report, including the challenges of finding the right pair of trees quickly.

But, there is an important consideration in choosing hammocks: The "hang" may be more critical with some than with others. Not just of angle, but of need for coverage. I believe our Clarks are tolerant of sub-optimal hanging in three ways.
    • First, the angle of the lines matters less, maybe due to stiffer fabric in the hammock bottom than used in many hammocks.
    • Second, we all have big saddlebag pockets in which to stash gear and clothing, without needing to also find a place on the ground to put that stuff. Two such roomy outside pockets at least (for the discontinued UL) and now a minimum of four for the other models.
    • Third, the large fabric end hoods over the ends of every Clark provide some protection from wind and sideways rain, so we can use shorter tarps if we wish, and therefor hang between trees that are closer together.

Again, all of that is not to minimize the challenge of scarce or exclusively large trees. I now know myself silly to be concerned in other HF subforums with consideration of whether to carry 6ft vs 8ft straps when the need frequently arises in real old-growth settings of how to mount to trees whose diameters are that large.

I ordered a pair of 8' (totem pattern) 2" polyester straps from Strapworks (wish they had daisy chain loop straps) and will likely carry both 6' & 8' sets that could be joined loop to loop for trees up to 4.3' in diameter in ancient forests. Heck, I have a tree that big, and a few over 2' diameter in my fenced yard. I'm not sure anyone outside of the Western Washington/California Redwoods areas would understand that.

Thanks, I'm pretty tight lipped about (usually productive) fishing spots. PM sent.

Re: All In - NX-250 First Hang

I'd like to again Thank all of the responders/CJH user family for your kind words and sharing your knowledge with a rookie. I feel as confident about the quality and comfort/safety/security of my CJH below timberline for adverse conditions as I do my $1K Warmlight 3RS 4 season expedition mountaineering tent. Even where it's easier to find tent sites than hanging opportunities I find there is waaay more space protected from rain under the Vertex tarp and a cozy, warm, & (if I had not had the acute shoulder pain) a more comfortable night's sleep in a hammock system. However I am not yet convinced I wouldn't (sorry for the tentative double negative) find my Warmlight tent more suitable for overnight ski/snowshoe trips in deep snow for protection from cold temps and wind-driven snow.

Frozen ground would be a problem for Handy Hammock stands, and deep snow offers its own advantages for insulation from cold and wind.

That said, the Handy Hammock support system with the NX and your large Vertex tarp could replace your tent more and more, as you enjoy the Ray Jardine-promoted advantage of ventilation few tents can offer.

See http://theultimatehang.com/2012/12/h...-stand-review/ , for example, and find discussions here in a couple (at least) threads here at HF.

Indeed. I usually took a few minutes to custom carve the snow base below a tent and snow shelter benches with dips for the hips, and comforts like steps starting at the door the tent, going down into a table with facing dual bench seating. Cooking and a candle lantern in an ample sized and ventilated tent with heat reflective fabric and in snow shelters definitely kept it warmer than the outside temps.

Agreed but it's hard for any other tent; especially one suitable for 4-season mountaineering, to beat the end to end zippered side windows in the fully loaded Warmlight 3RS that are designed so they can be rigged propped open in good weather but be self-shutting with a weather strip to minimize leakage when a strong wind comes up

    just sayin.

No, it's a 40 year old MSR external frame pack designed by founder Larry Penberthy. It is lighter than the JS models having a single very large compartment without the top stays, a full zippered rear entry, three compression straps, three side pockets with full zippered entry; two half height pockets on one side, one full height pocket on the other, and an ultra comfy back suspension made by girth hitching 50' of 5mm cord back and forth across the frame from below the hip belt to the top of the pack bag that flexes with the movement of my back and allows maximum air circulation. It's the most comfortable backpack I've ever tried for heavy loads on long nontechnical trails. I just finished a 16 miler with 3200' of elevation gain that I had done 39 years ago with the same pack; I'll have to post a trip report. No ski slots behind the pockets though that would be nice for carrying fly rods. However if any of the zippers blow out, I'd like to get a D2 but replace the padded back panels with the 5mm cord.
