I have a very basic, Kenmore sewing machine. The fabric was only too thick for my machine on the very ends of the final seams where my cord was coming out. So I stitched as close as I could w the machine, then put in a few stitches by hand where the tension would be greatest. Like I said, I really don't know anything about sewing machines. There is probably some way to get through thicker stuff. Check the "Thread Injector" threads for more info from the experts that are on here! I know just enough to get by

If we get the kids together to hike again, I'll give you one.

I use a $30 Kenmore sewing machine from a garage sale. I don't know anything about sewing machines! I got it years ago and took it down to Sears to ask how to thread it! I managed to find an old manual for it on the internet. It's been a challenge learning about different stitch lengths and tensions, but SO WORTHWHILE! I just made tree straps for the first time week before last. I now have a 100% DIY hammock setup. (Well, not the tarp, it is OES)
That'd be super cool! I'm thinking on making an IX underquilt soon myself. But I got 3 setups I have to outfit all at once. How small does it pack down to? I've even thought about making a summer down uq just to keep my kit down to bushwhacking size.

It's the size of a jacket in my back pack. It does not compress, really. I saw on that thread you got a few of the Walmart down bag. I think everyone wants to see one of those things get modded as an UQ! A very light fill down UQ would probably be better than my Scrap PLUQ for going ultralight.

Michelle, Great job on the UQ. I'd love to see you convert that walmart down bag into an UQ. - J

Michelle, I have 2 of those bags, and I think with the right clothes, they really are good to freezing temps. I did upper-30s several times with it as a tq and a blue pad and was quite comfortable, with no warm clothes. Got very warm with it that night on hawksbill. I'm aiming to keep my 1-2 night setup in that green pack I carried, and if I can keep the UQ small, I'll have it licked.

Ultrasmall is the goal, ultralight is just a bonus.

Sweet uq you've got there. I too have passed by that bin on several occasions and now you have given just the inspiration I needed to grab some up and make a few myself. Great job

I made a couple with Michelle's guidance (and her sewing machine).
