    Hang Guide Marked on Webbing

On the hammock I made last night, there are 2 15 foot 1 1/2 inch webbing straps attached directly to it. To make things simple for myself, I used the Ultimate Hang Calculator, thanks Derek, to figure out how long my suspension should be for each distance between trees and the height at which I should attach the suspension. Here isthe result

The bottom number is the distance between trees.
The Mark indicates where the strap should attach to the tree.
The top number is the height of attachment.
Keep it simple. The more crap you have and the more complicated it is, the more likely it is to break. Get back to basics man!

Do something similar with all my webbing straps. They double as tape measures. I just mark 1' increments along them.

Kind of a neat idea. It does seem that 15 feet is a bit long though. When I used webbing I never needed more than like 8 or 9 feet on each end to hang.

you are dead on with the level ground comment. I went for my very first hang this weekend and wound up with my feet 4 inches below my head. I kept sliding down in the hammock all night. Still the best camping sleep I have ever had, aside from sleeping on a double high air mattress.

    I just eyeball it now.

I start by placing the tree strap about eye level on the higher tree and adjust this height for the lower tree. I will then walk back a little ways to check how level my ridge line is and adjust if needed to get that "feet slightly higher than head" pitch.
I then take a seat and check the lay. I can then adjust again as needed for pitch or the amount of sag.
I find it is not hard to visually estimate a true horizontal for the ridge line, and the index-thumb trick is good for the 30 degree hang angle.

It usually takes at least 1 adjustment to get it right, but I'll admit to having to make several adjustment on more than one occasion if there is an unusual tree arrangement.

I still like the markings to get you in the right ballpark. I am horrible at estimating length/distance.

I like the idea. Nice job.

An alternative might be a line across the webbing like extension ladders have. A 60 deg line would be vertical at a 30 deg hang angle if my geometry is correct.
    YMMV
