What should I look for in hiking poles to use with my tarp in porch mode.

Any will work for porch...or just some sticks in the woods. I use Black Diamond Flick-Locks.

Second on the black diamond flick locks cork here.
I use Black Diamond Distance FL ( flick lock )
I use sticks. They're free and I don't have to carry them. Tarp lines to nearby trees work well too.

As Shug said just about anything will work for porch mode. I'm of the school of thought that one segmented, collapsible aluminum pole is as good as another. So, I buy the cheap flick lock type from wally world. They have worked just fine. I do prefer the flick lock over the twist lock though.

Aaron and I shop at the same store. Flick-lock style work better, IMO.
The twist style would collect dirt and dust and not always work in the field. The twist style also had a small screw that could come loose inside the pole.
I've used sticks for the most part, I can usually find plenty in the woods. The trek pole is for trekking.
I was looking for poles that went a little taller, and since I hike with them I didn't feel the need to have it collapse down to a short package, so I went with a pair of 2 section Black Diamond poles. They are about 5 inches taller than the 3 section poles when extended all the way, but they significantly longer when collapsed all the way too. If interested I'll see if I can find a link.

Porch moading the tarp is a secondary use for my trek poles for me. I love my Black Diamond Distance FLs and yes I use them for hiking. I don't know how I lived without them before. Point is, choose your pole for hiking first. If it's not getting the tarp up high enough in porch mode for your liking, go with the found sticks ypu can find or tie out to a tree or limbs nearby.
Happy hanging!
