    My hammock ripped in half

Argh! I had a very lightweight DIY gathered end hammock made with 1.1 mil nylon. I used it a lot in since last year. This weekend I had catastrophic failure! It ripped perfectly in half.
My friend was chivalrous and insisted I take his hammock and slept on the ground, but I am so sad about my hammock !
Has anyone had this happen and successfully sew the two pieces back together? Does it make for a torture seam to keep you awake all night?

    Major buzz-kill!

Get yourself a new piece of nylon and gather the ends. Sewing together two pieces will not be worth the trouble in the end. Good luck!

That's too bad. Hope you didn't get hurt when it failed. Any idea what caused it? I don't know about sewing it. I once had an ENO single nest and did not like the way the seam felt under my shoulder. It might feel ok under you but I'd just make a new one. If you don't know what caused the failure and reuse the material, you may have another failure waiting to happen.

I don't know what caused the failure. I was thinking I would just order a new piece of nylon, maybe a little thicker this time.
I loved that my whole set up only weighed 11 ounces, but that don't matter at all when you are looking at 2 pieces of hammock hanging from a couple trees.

I have a hammock with a flat fell seam across the width near my knees. I wondered if it would bother me, but I've never noticed it. If it were in the middle so it was under my back or butt that might be different. However, given that your hammock fabric failed once, I doubt that it's worth repairing. Make stuff bags.

Its hard to give up 11 ounces. From you gallery, it looked like a good little hammock. +1 on the stuff sacks and time for a new hammock. Glad you had a kind person with you to loan you their bed. The ground is a huge sacrifice!

A tablecloth is a great option if you're strapped for cash. I am afraid my ripstop one may fail soon. I accidentally snagged it on the ground and now there's some weak spots. I am planning to make another as well.

Just curious, you said it was 1.1 mil fabric? Or did you mean 1.1 oz/yard? Sometimes fabric degrades due to UV exposure, or perhaps there was a fault in that particular piece of fabric. Either way, I would go ahead and make another one and keep the 11oz system.

yep, that's what I meant 1.1 oz per yard.

I sprayed it a few weeks ago with Permethrin bug spray from Sawyer. It said it was totally safe for nylon, but now I'm skeptical. Anyone else spray a hammock with permethrin w ill effect?

I had a M50 hammock do the same thing back in Jan on the AT. I wouldn't recommend sewing it back together. Even if it is strong enough to hold it's always gonna be in the back of your mind. I turned my torn hammock into a DL hammock chair.
