    First extended hang/SC mountains

===> What a great trip report! Lessons from experience (both good and bad), and family reconnections in Nature are the huge payoff!

Many people don't sleep Well the first night, especially if its been a while.

Packs (and packing!) are uber important, and the 'ten essentials' (good Topo maps being one) are as well.

That said, you guys did it right, persevered through all the difficulties, saw some beautiful places, took memorable pictures, and saw past the issues to the beauty and potential that awaits you in the woods!

A group hang would be great for you guys!

Thank you for an insightful, and well done report!

    Hang on!

Great story. My first night in the hammock, it was 22 degrees and I had no underquilt or pads because I thought my 0 degree rated sleeping bag was already overkill....right? Learning experiences might not be fun, but they make great stories later.

You know what they say, "Good judgement comes from experience. And experience comes from bad judgement!"

Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

I'm a little late finding this post, but it's a great read and I love the pictures.
You made it thru some really difficult times and still were able to recognize the beauty.
I look forward to your next report.

That's a wonderful area to hike. I've done quite a bit of hiking in oconee county. Actually going to Burrell's Ford this weekend.

Thank you so much for the comments everyone!

Swampfox, thank you for all the maps you gave us. We did not get to complete the trip as planned. It was so rough the first day we only did a few easy-ish hikes the rest of the trip. That only means we have an excuse to try and complete the plan at a later date.

Granite, have a great time at Burrell's Ford this weekend! I hope you take pics and post a trip report. It is sooo beautiful there!

My first night out it got down to 9 degrees and all I had was a PLUQ and a reflectix pad. Cold is an understatement.

Thanks for the trip report. I live in the upstate and hike frequently on the Foothills Trail and dive at Devils Fork SP. If you are interested in any help, looking over your gear, or even someone to hike with, let me know.
You all made the best of the situation and learned from it. I look forward to seeing more reports from your family.

I did the Foothills Trail a couple of years ago and hung. We had a nice bear visit us early the next morning at Burrells Ford! Almost gave a companion the trail name of "'mornin' bear" because he first thought it was me coming to his tent, and he said "'morning" to the bear!

Thanks for sharing the great report and photos and memories!

Thank you Jeremy. We have enjoyed watching your Foothills videos and hope to hike it someday.

    Rain Man,
I am glad we did not see a bear at Burrells Ford! We did tie a little string around us with bear bells just in case.
