Newbie with a question or 2

First I'd like to say hello and thanks for all the great info on the site.

I am fairly new to backpacking and will be even newer to hanging. A good friend of mine got me into backpacking a couple years ago and I'm hooked.

Not knowing exactly what equipment I needed and to reduce overall weight, much equipment is shared and/or borrowed. Now that I have some miles under my belt, it's time for more comfortable sleeping and a personal shelter.

I have decided that a hammock is the way to go and from what I have seen the Clark Jungle North American fits the bill.

    Here are the questions:

    1. What are the approx. packed dimensions of the North American, I could not find anything on the site.

    2. From reading the forums it seems that many people take advantage of the insulating pockets by stuffing with clothes. Question I have is would it be feasible to use the hammock as an organized ward robe and just roll everything up together and stuff in your pack?
I've cut it twice and it's still too short.

I don't know much at all about the Clarks, so I'll leave that to someone better equipped to answer...

As far as using the pad pockets for clothing storage, I think it's feasible. Basically just like stuffing the hammock and clothes into the same stuff sack. And if you're using your spare clothing as part of your insulation system on a regular basis, it might save you some setup time, too. On the other hand, it might make getting to your clothes a little more difficult while hiking. There's always a tradeoff!

The Gearskin pack made by Moonbow uses a similar concept, but it's far from a "conventional" pack. If this kind of storage system appeals to you though, you might want to check it out. Here's a link:

Rover, first off, welcome to the forum! You'll find the hanging gang here wise, informative and even a bit quirky, but overall a fun, great group of guys and gals! I have no knowledge of the clark, but I'm pretty sure there are plenty here who do. Welcome aboard and happy hammocking!

    Thanks for the link blackbishop.

As a jungle hammock is far from a "conventional" tent an unconventional pack shouldn't dissuade me.

That got me thinking even further. Leave your bag and clothes in the hammock and you've just tackled most of the bulk.

    roverdisc1,

    Welcome to the Hanging Gang....

Rolling it all up and stuffing the complete camp in a pack is not as convienent as it sounds.... most items, including the hammock have and should have multiple uses to a hiker.... packing components or items separately has more benefits on average...

My daughter has a Clark. With the attached pockets under the Clark I would think packing clothes in them would be entirely feasible.

    Welcome Rover,
I have a few comments on the Clark. My little brother wants one so I have been doing research. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Clark is one of the only hammocks you cannot sleep on a diagonal (research threads to find more on sleeping diagonal). Also, the outside pockets and the gun pocket inside are what is luring my brother to it. First, you may not be an ultra liter but how much clothes do you normally pack? I normally have (worn) shirt, short/half zip pants, sock and shoes. Clothes in pack for me is minimal. I don't think you can bring enough to fill the pockets under and still keep a decent size pack size and weight. You could use blown up zip locks (gallon size). Also with all the clothes you are bringing or zip locks you still need top insulation. Also the largest rain fly they have is 100" at the head and 60" at the foot and from what I have read is a little difficult to remove for the hammock to store fly separate.
Also for the price of the Clark you can get a Mosquito Traveler and a KAQ or JRB. Just my 2
