Singer 15-91

Hi hangers! I'm just about to start hammocking. I'm looking to make my own and I need a sewing machine. I've never used one before so I was hoping someone can tell me if this is a good buy.

The Singer 15-91 is a great machine and I might pay the $33 just for the table.

With that said, the finish on the machine looks pretty rough and may or may not clean up and shine again and there may be a small amount of surface rust in a few spots. These things won't hurt the function of the machine.

There are a lot of "I don't know if it works" in that ad when plugging it in would tell.

With a 15-91 made in 1946, there is a good chance the wiring will need replaced (may be the reason for the "I don't knows"). The wiring between the connector block and the motor requires soldering inside the motor.

The grease in the motor/gear housing will need cleaned out and replaced.

If you are handy working on small equipment and don't mind spending a few evenings putting it in good working order, it should make a good gear making machine.

Thanks gmcttr! I was just worried it wouldn't hold up to load bearing fabrics. Second worry would be that it comes out a money sink. Probably gonna buy it.

Typically I might spend $15-$50 to put a 15-91 in good working condition. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you get it.

Also consider including a replacement 1.0 ampere motor when you have it running okay. (Ebay for not to much money).

It will allow easier start up and sew multiple layers much easier.

New replacement motors are not available for the 15-91 and 201-2 which use a built in motor referred to as a "potted motor".

Yeah ah, I wouldn't buy it if you intend on using it much.
Look for a treadle foot machine with an exterior motor and with forward and reverse. You can usually find a decent one for about $150
Just my advice, you don't have to take it.

great machine for the home hobbyist- that's the model I have, and I love it but I don't use it up to it's full potentional ! 33$ for a machine with so many unknows,coupled with that condition ( and lack of attachments), seems high to me- I got mine for 20$...btw that table isn't ome for that machine!

Wow! Really? You are the first person I have seen recommend not getting a Singer 15-91 or 201-2 for casual home use and go straight to industrial machines.

Thank you for all the feedback! I will keep my eyes open and try to be patient enough to find that good deal. Of course I don't anticipate a ton of projects it's safe to assume I will spiral out of control shortly after I learn how.
