    i hang...therefore i am...

finally got hanging in back yard...

buried a 6x6 pressure-treated post in the ground for one end,
and hung an eye hook into my shed for the other...

the two eye-hooks are about 15 1/2 feet apart.

cost the same as building the wooden stand from plans here but this set-up never has to be moved to mow the lawn, or stored in the winter!

so glad to be to be hanging!

I'm thinking about doing something similar. I've got the urge to hang, but nowhere to do it!

Congrats on getting out! Backyard hanging spots are critical for success, in my opinion. Being able to do test hangs not only allows for easy gear/setup experimentation, it's a great way to take a nap!

Sleeping out in the yard is fun and if you have a quiet area,it is really no different than the woods.More critters in urban areas than you think.Just spent 2 nights in western MD and never saw any wild life. I have had deer ,racoons, skunks and various other varmits around my house in the DC suburbs

it is amazing how much you feel the cold on the hammock side of your body!
it was comfortable t-shirt weather in the shade, and the slightest breeze was noticeable and it was only early evening.
i am going to make an underquilt before i try sleeping in the hammock, thats for sure...

I've got two trees 18 feet apart. But I can make it work. Next is eyebolts in the house. I'm really not wanting to sleep in my bed.

Why would you put away a stand in the winter?? Aren't you Canadian?

I have seen more critters in my back yard than I have ever seen in the woods.

As far as weather, I live between the Atlantic Ocean (two blocks away) and there's a swamp and a river behind my property. The winds shift unpredictably and there is often driving precipitation.

If I can survive my back yard, I can survive anything! I learned everything I know about hammock camping in my back yard.

I've practiced setting up in storms, tearing down in storms. I've practiced setting up in high winds, and 0* Fahrenheit temps. I wouldn't even consider going out in the woods without practicing in my backyard.
