I'm getting started with all this stuff and wanted to make some whoopies. If I went to REI or Home Depot what lines should I look for to make suspension whoopies, and remind me how much length for each side?
Thanks,
Todd

The main options are amsteel blue and dynaglide, which I don't believe are available at REI or Home Depot. You can order it from reddenmarine or westmarine. 25 feet would get you two whoopies.
I purchase Amsteel from West Marine and have it shipped free to the store. Dynaglide, Lash-it and Zing-it I have found in-stock at a local Arborist supply store.
Good Luck
I ordered my amsteel from West Marine, but if you order it from Redden Marine and use the code "HAMMOCKFORUM" you get a little discount I ordered my zing-it from Redden.
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!
I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.
It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.
Just to clarify, the aforementioned Lash-it and Zing-it are for guylines and other non weight bearing uses. They are NOT for hammock suspension.

+1 on 7/64 amsteel for that stuff. The only suspension-related items I occasionally get from REI is shock-cord for underquilts or maybe some webbing in a pinch.
Redden Marine is good if you want an entire spool (ie 600 feet or so) of amsteel. If you want smaller amounts, I find DutchWareGear.com to be competitive price-wise, and you get to support one of our cottage vendors (and perhaps indulge the compulsion to buy some cool other items).

As others said, you won't find any good stuff at REI or Home Depot.
As far as length, I think I made my first set or two of whoopies with 20' of Amsteel for each side, but that turned out to be lots of extra as I hung a few times. If the trees are so far apart that you need that much length, you won't be able to get it high enough on the trees without climbing them, to keep your butt off the ground in the middle at a 30-degree hang angle. I eventually shortened them.
I think 15' is what many use to make whoopies for each side. But someone will speak up if my memory is off.
I also switched to tree straps with only one sewn loop, and make a marlin spike hitch wherever needed (so that's an additional length adjustment I have on each end).
Finally, I take a "dog bone" or two of Amsteel, about 24" long. I can use them for extra length if needed, or to hang my pack from a tree, or to extend my rainfly tie-outs. I've had to do one or more of the above on various hangs.
A "dog bone" is a length of line with a locked-Brummel loop on each end.

Whatever length you want your whoopie sling just double it and add foot give or take for the buries so for a 6 foot sling use 13 feet of amsteel.

If you just want to practice with splicing, cheaply, you can get a spool of braided mason line. This isn't good for much of anything aside from guylines and practice, but it is cost effective for those purposes.
