Does anyone know if this place is friendly to hangers? Looking to do and overnight out here, but it doesn't look like they have backcountry camping. Anyone familiar with this park/area?

They do not have backcountry camping. They do have car-park-camping. It is a beautiful park though as is the park just 10 minutes south of there, Matthiessen.
The northern 3/4 of Illinois is not backcountry friendly as far as I have found.
+1 for Matthiessen--smaller, but less crowded and just as scenic. Don't know much about the camping/hanging there, as it is close enough to where I live that my only experiences there have been day trips. Wouldn't be hard to find a place, but whether or not they frown upon it, I don't know, sorry...
A lot of the sites at Starving Rock would be good for hanging. Not sure what their policy is on it, though.
When we stayed there a couple of years ago, we were terrorized by raccoons both nights. It got so bad that I was ready to start kicking tail and taking names. They tried to get into EVERYTHING. Luckily we were in a tent camper, but it was still a real PITA.
The park is beautiful, but it is away from the actual campground. I'm not even sure if the campground is in the park proper.
If your lucky enough to be outdoors, your lucky enough!
