I took a small carabiner and wrapped my ridgeline around it several times to shorten it a bit. Don't have to cut it and can play with it some.

Update - raised the foot end to be 12" higher than the head end AND wrapped the RL around a 'beener a few times. Result: Bliss! Flat, no squeeze, neck is not torqued, and found it to be very comfortable and restful. Such an easy fix - thanks for the suggestions, all. This is why I asked.
