    Hello from Charleston, SC

So I stumbled upon "hangin" quite by accident. My boyfriend and I did an awesome backpacking trip in late feb early march through the Grand Canyon, R2R2R. On the last night in Bright Angel we ran into a group of 4 or 5? guys with hammocks. The one name I remember was "Tewa". Anyway they convinced me to try it out their DIY hammock gear and it took everything out of me to get out of it. I thought it was a novel idea, using a hammock, but didn't put too much more thought into it. About 2 weeks after we got back a friend of ours was telling us about his hammock and then REI had the Eno double nest on sale and I bought it on a whim.

We decided to test it out in the Smokies in mid June this summer. My brother used it first and loved it despite the cold. I bought just the hammock, no rain fly, no underquilt, no special "slap" straps. The next night we wound up sharing a campsite with "Roche" and "Hangin" who told me about this forum. On that same trip my boyfriend and I tried it, together, with a thermarest pad and he is now hooked as well. He is determined to share hammock. We'll see on that one. First I need to acquire more than just the hammock to truely test it.

But long story short I really know nothing about this world of hangin'. I'd like to know more. And I love the idea of making your own gear.... so I'm going to start with the Rain Fly.

Welcome to the forums from the upstate. I have family in Charleston. We have a great DIY community here and it seems that you've already met quite a few of the infamous.

If I can be of any help, let me know. Several of us have Youtube channels that may aid in your understanding and might I recommend becoming aquainted with the forums as much as possible and maybe even attend a social gathering like a group hang. There is one in the lower part of the state this fall. If you wish to make it to a group hang sooner, there is one just over the NC border next Friday.

    HI!
Welcome from Greenwood! We have a great group of hangers in our state and we get together fairly often to camp. I hope you can join us at the Fall Sprawl in September. The link to the planning page is in my signature. Also, we have a FB group page. Follow the link to find us there, too! Feel free to ask questions. We all love to help.

    Hey there Gadzooks,

Glad you found the forum and found your way out of the Smokies. In a short time you have met two well known hangers and innovators, te-wa and hangnout. As it's been said, going to a hang is a great way of seeing different rigs and techniques in practice. You'll learn a lot here, so much that you'll have info overload and then not know which way to go. There is no perfect way, just do what works for you.

Hope to see you down the trail.

    Welcome from Charlotte NC!

Glad you found us here in this corner of the Internet.

I recall the trip reports from the trips you mentioned - small world to bump into those folks.

Prop your feet up and stick around for awhile.
