I never tried the stock XL, I opted for the larger Vertex tarp and have never found it to be too large. I had some bad experiences with inadequate shelters way back when, and now I find little comfort with just adequate rain tarps. Heck, even the large ones aren't large enough sometimes.

I started out with a Vertex tarp. Got soaked by side-ways rain. Got PO'd an got a Warbonnet superfly, the one with doors in the ends. love it. I STILL got sopping wet in a deluge in Colorado. Harsh lesson learned: Don't cinch the tie-downs till the seams stretch. You would not believe how much water can come through those little bitty needle holes in a hard rain! After a fanatical application of seam sealer, and a garden hose test, I am completely sold on the superfly. Well worth the $$. Sorry, no Pix, try warbonnet website.

Have the Vertex. Spent this evening sewing a diy Super sized winter tarp. 144" RL with enclosed ends.

I bought a tarp from Warbonnet. Sets up easy stays tight and is waterproof. Also it is plenty big to cover my hammock and any gear that I have with me.
