Oh now I'm mad at myself! I can't figure out why, but when I was making my locked brummels with one end of the rope it kept adding a "double twist" in the rope instead of bringing it back to normal so it would be smooth and streamlined when I tightened it. Happened on 3/4 that I made yesterday, but it didn't happen when I made my whoopies or adjustable ridgeline. Today I thought about it and realised I could have avoided the frustration (and having funky-looking locked brummels that probably have even more reduced strength) if I had made the locked brummels using both ends of the rope! D'oh
