    Suggestions on extras...

So! I just received my first hammock yesterday, a used WB Traveler that I purchased here. It came with the webbing suspension and some biners. When it comes to hammocking, this is ALL I have, nothing more.

I am fully setup for regular tent backpacking. So for now I'm using my pads as a UQ, and my sleeping bag as a TQ. Those will be upgraded later.

I want to become fully setup for hammocking, but I know I need to pick up a few extras. At the top of my list is a bug net and tarp, I'll probably stick with WB here as well. After this point, it gets a little fuzzy. Can you guys make some suggestions? I was thinking about storage (ridgeline bag thingy?), storage for the hammock itself (stuff bag, double ended stuff bag, snakeskins?, black bishop bag?). Are there any other odds and ends that will make my first experience easier? I'd rather avoid learning the hard way

    thanks!!

Welcome to your new life above ground

The general recommendation is snake skins for the tarp.

I use a normal stuff sack for my hammock (BIAS WW), but many like the double-ended/bishop bags.

Ridgeline storage is nice, but not critical. I don't carry a lot in my pockets while backpacking, so I typically only have a light on my ridgeline.

I recommend getting a little bit of tyvek (I use an old priority mail envelope) as a little mat to set next to your hammock.

The best news is, all of the above can be cheaply and easily made by you with a sewing machine

Brandon (WB) makes great stuff, but don't forget to check out other vendors for your equipment. There is no problem with a mix-and-match set of gear

Storage bags, Ridge line Organizer, Snakeskins, Mesh pack pockets, hats, would all be on the same order to Mountaingoat.

    That is all

thanks fellow michigander! i will definitely look into your suggestions. the manufacturer of my gear doesn't really matter to me, i do like supporting the local guys though. I just couldn't find an add-on net that weighed less than WB's, and pretty much the same for the Edge tarp (being in california now i don't need too much coverage, plus i'm a packbacker, and want to keep it relatively light for the price).

Mountaingoat is a member here who runs a small cottage industry. I haven't ordered anything from her, but I've seen many positive reviews. http://www.outdoortrailgear.com/cott...s-goods-store/

+1 on Mountaingoat for extras. I like snakeskins for my tarp, and she makes really nice mesh ones. She also makes ridgeline organizers. I ordered a custom alpaca/merino blend hat for my wife at Christmas, and the quality and speed were amazing. In my opinion, she is the type of cottage industry that is worth supporting.
