I always make sure they are completely dry, them they can be left in the stuff sacks. If they are left damp they will mildew and that is not good!
I hang mine up. No particular reason, just habit.

After a trip or a night out in the backyard, as long as everything is nice and dry, in the stuff sacks they go. If it's real humid or raining outside, I do what I need to do to to set them up inside my tiny little house (as in hooks hung up so I can stretch some para-cord out in the living room and let the stuff hang for a day or two).
I always unpack mine for a few nights after they have been outside for any amount of time. I figure getting them out in my air conditioned basement will make sure everything is try. After a day or two they go back into their stuff sacks and back on their shelves.

Always make sure your gear is clean and dry before storing. I take my gear out once a year to set it up and hose it off/clean then let it dry and store.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I unpack mine and hang it in my hobby room from wall to wall.
