Finally returning to Isle Royal...need a pack for my 9 year-old

Among my favorite places to backpack is Isle Royale NP. I love the landscape, the views, the wildlife and the climate. I like to hike Isle Royale. Alas, It has been 18 years since I was last able to hike there. Long story short, the packs were too heavy, the girlfriend had a bad trip but she married me anyway, the ensuing kids made a return unfeasible. UNTIL NOW!!!

Lighter weight gear, an astounding growth spurt in the youngest of my 2 boys and a concession that we can stay in the lodge 1 night have swayed the wife.

My youngest is 9 years old, ~ 75 lbs and 54 inches. I am looking for suggestions for a backpack for him. I was hoping to get something with a hip belt that might be adjustable for a couple years.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I have a pack that my daughter has outgrown. My pack is an Osprey Kids Ace 48. Let me know if you are interested.

If the ACE suites you go for it. OTOH a 9 yr old is no Sherpa. His book bag may be enough for this year. If he manages his clothes and sleep system plus a water bottle you will be doing well.
    YMMV

My 8 Year old daughter Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, 12.5 miles. This is a Deuter pack, not the Osprey.

I have been researching your reccommendations. It is surprising how heavy they make kid-specific packs. I'll be trying my hand at some form of DIY hipbelt that I can retrofit to his bookbag.

    Thanks everybody for your input.
