    'tailored' hammock?

Not sure what to call it but let me describe it....

There are many ways to make a hammock out of solid fabric, generally out of a rectangular piece of fabric, with the ends whipped or gathered.

Is there a design where, instead, of gathering the ends the fabric is instead cut and sewed into a canoe or banana type volume, using several panels stitched together? The cloth is no longer a rectangular panel but rather cut to a 3D shape.

If this exists, what is it called? And is there a DIY here for it?

If not, I am presuming there is a good reason it doesn't.

    Thanks,

    Philip

I would think there would be too much shoulder squeeze, but that is just my $0.02.
Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in...

    You might be right.
Maybe a better description is like underquillts are cut from a roughly diamond shape with darts cut out and sewn to form to the presumed shape of the tarp above it.... Could a hammock be cut like that in the first place?

Good question. The main reason a hammock is usually made from a single piece of fabric is to maintain strength.

One problem that comes to mind, assuming each panel would be shaped similar to this...

    shaped panel.jpg

...is that the load will be concentrated on to the point of the panel whereas with a gathered rectangle the load is spread over the width that is loaded.

Yeah, strength was my first thought too.

Thanks everyone. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Yeah, minus the bridge. Basically trying to trim away the 'dead weight'. Although I'm starting to see without the bridge it might just trap you in

Yeah not sure how comfortable that would be but I really hope you dont give up on it. You never know, you may be on to the next big thing. Keep it up.

    Thank you sir.

Basically I'm mentally playing around with how to replicate this:

I have a mummy bag I got from the thrift store that I'm not afraid to tear up. I got some nylon I can play with.

My line of thinking goes kind of like this:

I don't want to cut those big slots in the head and foot - looks like you'd wake up with some cold feet!

So I was thinking what if you cut and trim the hammock to size and either gathered the ends or (maybe revisiting your design) using a bridge at the end to contain the hammock within the bag. Then you'd just pass a few lines of paracord from the hammock through each end of the bag and cinch the bag tight around the paracord lines.

Gut says the hammock would be too short and not very comfortable, whereas if you pass all the material through you can do a Hennessy-style asym cut.

Open to thoughts! Ideas! Suggestions! I've been trying to find another example online other than this (or designs similar to this) and the peapod or clones of this design is about all I'm finding.
