    Australian DIY'ers

Just wondering where Aussie DIY'ers source there materials from?

Spotlight has the ripstop and its pretty affordable. As for silnylon I cant find any Aussie suppliers and to import is exorbitant up to $50+. Does anyone make there own ripstop silnylon from the spotlight stuff? does it hold up alright? does it become too heavy?

They also stock mossie netting, which i will probably use, as again importing the noseeum is expensive for a one off build.

I'm making my own stuff to save cash and weight but i am not willing to send myself broke over a few grams.

    Cheers fellow hangers!

That's funny mate cause I was about to post the same question. Just this weekend I bought some rip stop nylon from Spotlight, so I can make a hammock for my daughter. Good to lnow about the mossie net.

Not sure about local suppliers of silnylon but you could probably email Evan at Terra Rosa Gear, he may know or be able to get you some. He is always very helpful and has some great gear as well - I have a tarp on order .

I would be interested in local suppliers of amsteel rope as well.

You can sometimes get amsteel from AMTC, but he only has Lash-it and Zing-it at the moment. Some materials can be sourced from the UK, and shipping is way better than US.

Also, if you put out a shout at Bushwalk.com, you can sometimes either source or get in on a group purchase.

Just found this stuff, which should be good for whoopie slings, Ocean 12 by Donaghys.

    Cheers for that lads,

That ocean 12 stuff looks pretty good, i was trying to find a substitute for amsteel which is a bit scares in these parts, at-least in the thinner diameters.

I might pop Evan an email too, but the tarp will be a little bit later in the DIY department as it the dry season here and my emergency one will do for now. I've checked out the terra nova gear looks like well made kit. I'm still interested in having a go at sealing my own ripstop.

I'm a member over at bushwalker.com as well and regularly check whats going on in there DIY forums. Will keep you guys posted on my finds etc and if i have any spare gear happy to swap/sell/trade.

    Cheers for the info

The cheapest place I could find for the Ocean 12 was Rope Galore, free postage is nice. I have ordered some so will see how it goes.

Spotlight $10 gift card for free

If you sign up to spotlight VIP club online you get a free $10 gift card i just brought 4 metres of ripstop for $17 from there its normally $6.95 p/m. I also signed up my girlfriend so we managed to get $20 worth of gear for nothing. They also have synthetic quilted material there which might work as an under-quilt in the warmer environ's or Aus.

Hows that ocean 12 rope Mr Ploppy?

    Australian DIY'ers

Bunnings can be a great source for our equivalent of NoSeeUm netting.
Be aware though that stock can really vary store to store and especially region to region.

It looks good. I will try to make up my first whoopie slings tonight, after getting a good sized "dolls needle" from Spotlight which should do the trick.

Rope Galore service was excellent for the Ocean 12 - very fast. I also got some thinner rope for my new Terra Rosa Gear tarp .
