If you pick a site along the creek that runs thru Elkmont,,lots of trees,,but they may not be over a tent pad..at the time your going,,you should be able to change campsites after your there,,so go ahead and reserve one now. Most of the kids will be back in school by then, and you should be able to switch out your campsite for one that you find,,that will suit your needs.

I think it all depends on the current campground hosts.
I just camped in Cataloochee, 2 hammocks. One next to tent pad and one no where near. No problems. Host came over and asked all kind of questions, none related to where I should be hanging.
I don't think it is that big of a deal. When you go into just about any GSM campground, there are blue tarps stretched for miles from every tree around, some with care...most with reckless abandon.
I saw a site covered with painters plastic covering close to 1000 sf, ridiculous.
