Tutorial: Turning a Whoopie into a UCR

Here's a quick easy way to turn your whoopie slings into a pair of utility constrictor ropes.


Here's a whoopie sling, spliced to a strap, with a whoopie hook.



Pull enough out to tie a knot...



...and cut



... pull it out



...cut off the tail



DON'T FORGET TO TAPER!



I've read others having trouble cutting amsteel, I just hold the strands with my thumb, and pull down on the other side. Works great...



re-splice your hook (if your only using a fixed eye, you can skip the step of pulling out the splice, you can make a fixed eye with one end of the cord, not so easy with hardware though...)



pull the end back through the constrictor....



re-backsplice the tail



Start the safety knot...



...finish the safety knot



backsplice the end (ok I guess now you've finished the knot)



Here's your finished UCR



all wrapped up

I made something similar to this just messing around. More like "what if a UCR and a whoopie got together, what would their child look like.??" (I get bored on night shifts and HAVE to mess around with stuff...)

All I had was some cheapo 300lb working load limit cordage from Menards that I removed the core from.

Made the fixed loop and instead of burying the whole tail, made it extra long and brought it back out. Bring the long end around and bury it in that tail, leaving a tag end for adjusting.

Amazingly enough, the dang things actually held me up! Although I don't think I'd trust em for too long. Don't know what removing the core did to the WLL and this stuff fuzzes up the more you work with it.

Function like a UCR but still the double line of a whoopee though.

Once I get some Spectra type cordage, I'll be making some UCRs. I'll keep these other creations for strapping or bundling stuff.

Similar, but these are WAY too small to use as tree slings. Here's a pic:



The "Weak Point" is where the tail come out of its bury and the adjustable loop bury comes out of the tail. It sees a lot of handling, so with this particular cordage, it fuzzes up pretty quick and gets weak.

Like I said, get bored on those long night shifts...

This stuff is just the outer weave of that cheap Menards rope. Why experiment with the "GOOD" stuff? The main mistake with this design is that I didn't milk the Brummel bury good before I turned around and buried the adjustable line in the left over tail. When loaded, the outer part of the Brummel bury slides down and hits the exit point of the adjustable bury. A little more distance between these two points (and higher quality cordage!!) and this thing might work better.

Already experimenting with other ideas though.......

Doesn't the ucr have less strength than a woopie, when taken down to one length than the two in a woopie?

No because no even a whoopie goes down to one strand beneath the constrictor. Wouldnt matter either way with amsteels breaking strength.

This thread is great! Why couldn't I have found it sooner?

Did this very Whoopie/UCR conversion last night and sorted it out on my own. I also like your locking knot and the return bury. I did that a couple of years ago and fleshed it out through experimentation. I could have saved myself some headscratching if I was able to search this forum more effectively. I would have realized that fallkniven had put the answers I was looking for on here six years ago. Thanks for the solid info.
