    Dutch clip weight limits

Hello all. I have been looking at Dutch clips which have an occupant weight rating of 300lbs. Has anyone over the weight limit ever used Dutch clips and was there any problems? I am over that weight limit rating and was curious if they would support me.

The 300lbs limit is a safety factor. I don't know the exact number but I think Dutch has tested his clips to over 1000lbs. I think you'd be alright. If you are worried get some climbing rated carabiners.

The clips shouldn't be a problem, it's the webbing at and around the hardware that you will need to keep an eye on. Also; the closer to the anchoring point that the hardware is, the more stress it will apply to the webbing in that area.
I can make straps break way below their max strength just by moving the hardware closer to the anchoring point.

Short of the long. Dutch has good and proven products so I wouldn't worry about the hardware breaking at all under his recommendations. Keep an eye on the straps.

I think he means the distance from the tree. If the clips are up against the tree or if you give it some slack and hook it on closer to the hammock.

I also wondered the weight limit. Is that 300 per clip? Or 600 total? If you weight 300 wouldn't 150 be applied to each clip?

No. At a 30* hang angle there will be 300 lbs applied to each strap for a 300 lbs person.

Move the weight up and down in this simulator to see the effect of angles...http://tagsafety.com/library6.asp

Right! The useful load of the buckle doesn't really matter if it is attached to a piece of thread. The rating of the unit, all materials and hardware is the rating of the strap under it's intended use.
I/O/W. If you have a 10000 pound steel ring hooked to a thread and the thread breaks at 3 pounds consistently under the same forces, According to the Web and Sling manufacturers association the "Unit" should be rated for a safe working load of 1/3rd it's breaking strength. Which would be 1 pound.
But there is also another rating called, "Proof Loading." where a strap is pulled 1 1/2 times the load that a customer request for a certain load factor.
So if you call and say, "I want a strap that will hold 5000 pds." It can be proof loaded to 7500 lbs and showing no damages, be considered a safe application.
