Dog had over 150 ticks on him in the first two days, the mosquitoes (which swarmed by the hundreds) laughed at permethrine and deet and the deer flies were starting to come out. Despite months of planning and prep, we had to call it quits after 3 days (for the sake of the dog as well as our sanity). We were heading SOBO. PM me if you have any additional questions.
I attempted the same hike a couple weeks earlier and had the same experience...minus the heat. My pup (and myself) had an unbelievable amount of ticks. I ended up calling it due to a paw injury my dog had that I was worried about healing on the trail.

It's all the garlic you eat with your pizza.

We were up around Lutsen/Grand Marais the 15th-19th and surprisingly found the bugs to be very few for Northern MN but it was relatively cool. At times we used bug spray and we didn't see one tick. I've seen hundreds at other times. Sometimes, it's just the timing and location.
