I will be there
I will be there
I am trying to finish up the hennepin canal trail only about 15 miles left
Lock 19 to Lock 3 so I think I will be west of you guys that day
I just finished a 3 day trip from the Iowa border to lock 19 and the camping areas there have very few great hang spots but stealth spots along the canal were plentiful
not sure how the DNR would respond to stealths in the area I camped at campsites for class C camping and the DNR was there every night to collect the $8.00
Water was a slight concern so the 3L I carried each day was heavy
I might see if I can change it to get out with you the 19th
How Many Days are you planning to be out there and what sites are you thinking of using ?
I am taking a train from Chicago to Princeton,IL and then road walk to lock 21 to camp(great Site) then proceed east to lock 3 (stealth along the way or Lock 6,11,17 camping)then head back to Princeton, IL (road walk)
I have completed the I&M Trail already and stealth camped most of the way
Still having trouble finding the time to do the RTR trail in Shawnee but December might work
I tend to take the Train so that the wife can have the car and it makes it easier when solo hiking, camping a few hours or more from Home
I will keep checking the thread and let you know if I will meet you guys the 19th maybe even for just the day
"HANGING OUT" has taken on a whole NEW MEANING
im planning on being there saturday morning thru sunday morning. the camp site is near mc kinley woods 3-4 miles west of chanahon along the trail, pay 6 bucks at the ranger station in chanahon.its right on the river. if ya pass the nuke plant ya went too far. campsites arent marked very well along the I&M trail. there is no water but brand new pit toilets. if you want pm me your number and we can touch base larter this week.
We are supposed to get a permit at the information center. Anyone know the hours they are open. Can we leave our cars in the parking lot at the information center?
I have canoed that area before and may see you there. It is difficult canoeing back up the Dupage. I canoe up the Dupage to the first bend then carry over to the canal.
Any other canoeists?
looks like I will not be able to make it this weekend
"HANGING OUT" has taken on a whole NEW MEANING
when i called morris, they told me they get to chanahon around 7:30 - 8:00 am, and usually there till around 4. you can leave your vehicle at chanahon, but you must inform them that you are and leave your permit stub in your windshield. thje lot is patroled by chanahon police. same thing goes if you plan to leave it in morris.
i will try to pick up some caution tape or surveyors tape this week and mark the trail that vears off to the left (south) to get to the campsite. i am planning on leaving early if thats ok with you gallo. say like get to chanahon around 8:30ish?
It might be easier to make a smallish cardboard sign. That way we can have the trail marked AND have fireplace kindling once we're all there. I went down and checked out the campsite yesterday. Looks pretty nice, tons of room but not too many hangable trees. There was a construction/maintenance crew there but I didn't see what they were up to. I did find out that they were waiting for a Caterpillar machine of some sort but the guy didn't say specifically what for. I hope they weren't clearing any of the few remaining trees.
Good to see other fellow Chicago'ins here! Although I'm out of the country, lemme know if ya'll plan on having any more trips soon!
What that means is something happened...
