Clear windy night no tarp needed, snake skins flapped like crazy.

Used my HH as I did not yet have a WBBB and Superfly on a trip out to west TX to hunt. I decided to stargaze that night plus if any coyotes came up for a snack I'd get them first through the mosquito netting. Well I use snakeskins and that night they flapped, I got barely any sleep, actually I just kept waking up to the flapping and it was cold so I stayed put.

What did I do wrong with the snakeskins? As I'm in a WBBB now and converted to Brandon's stuff sacs and use the snakeskins on the tarps can I silence them somehow? The wind in west TX is relentless.

Windy nights are noisy. Your outside with limited shelter. The trees will make noise. The tarp will make noise.
Embrace the chaos as an adventure or try some earplugs.

A couple of extra lengths of shock cord tied around the the centers should quiet things down a bit.

Wait, they flapped with the tarp stuffed in them? Sounds like they're too big - I guess the HH skins are designed to hold the entire setup, not just the tarp - plus, they're sil. Might get some mesh skins instead.

But SnrMoment's suggestion seems like a practical one, too.

On my tarps (HG Cuben and a Superfly), I use Mesh snakes from Mountain goat. No flapping at all
On my WBBB, I use HH snakes, I think they are the "4" model? under the tarp, they don't flap at all. Even with the tarp in it's skins, I don't think the skins would flap much.
I also use some silicone mouldable ear plugs.
Maybe a photo of the skins as they were deployed, so we can see what was flapping

Sry 'bout the potty mouth.....I think it was the sil scraping against the mesquite tree or them flapping ( the wind was relentless ).....Every time I woke up I thought a crazed skunk was climbing the tree and going to jump into the bug net or an owl had crash landed.....I should have positioned myself better but the trade off was the amazing view.....next time I'll find a leeward spot and roll the skins up into themselves to minimize rattling.

Could have also been some really fat mice scurrying along the bark, I guess.

Man i'm slow... So, your skins are not mesh? I can see where silnylon or cuben skins could catch some wind and be a mite noisier. Either way, sounds like your solution is spot-on!

Why didn't you just take the dang tarp down if the noise was keeping you up silly boy?

My worse "can't get to sleep for all the noise" night camping was in a tent. Ever since college I had learned to fall asleep to white noise, it really helped in the dorms. When I got a sound machine I changed that around to other options. So here I am out camping trying to focus on the sound machine and the quite in the country was just drowning out my sound machine. Then it hit me, the current setting was on crickets and the danged environment was filled with crickets aaand some cheeping little frogs. I turned off the sound machine and was asleep probably less then a minute later. It took a couple seconds of chuckling.

Along the same lines I was listening to a New York based radio show and these people were astounded when for some reason sombody brought up the fact that they'd heard a plane going overhead. "Where's the airport around there?" "There isn't one, it's an airliner way up there leaving contrails." Having always lived with the backdrop of way too many people in the area and never having been out here in the plains they had no concept of quite. They've never been suprised on a still night when an otherwise quite coyote has entered your proximity and has a small bout of flatulence. By the way, you really wish for SOME wind when that happens and you want to be on the upper side of it. PHEW! and I thought my dogs were bad.
