Velcro - What Is It Good For?

Is there any purpose, other than scratching my legs when exiting, to the velcro on the entry slit of a Hennessy hammock? It strikes me that once I am in the hammock the tension on the fabric will keep the entry slit closed without the velcro. Am I missing something?

My velcro gets so full of fuzzy crud that it hardly holds at all. I couldn't get a loud noise out of it if I tried. So no.... I don't think it serves much purpose except to placate the newbies who are afraid they will fall out if there is no closing thing on the slit. Either that or it makes the ground work for the patent claim of a self sealing bottom access slit.

I am not going to take it off because I don't mind it being there. But in my DMB w/BEEP I have left the closure (zipper in this case) undone and the slit seems to stay closed just fine.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I've always thought it worked fairly well on the Hennessy entry slits. I refuse to use any bug nets or quilts using long lengths of it.

The idea is to be able to seal the hammock when you aren't in it. That way you (in theory) don't climb into a hammock full of mosquitoes. But, just about anything tossed into the hammock, like a pack or quilt, is enough weight to seal the slit.

The older light weight models do not come with them. My 7 yr old likes the velcor on his Scout model. Safety blanket! Cannibal is right about that empty hammock thing.

This is what I always thought too. There have been times where the mosquitoes were so bad that I was grateful for this to keep them out while I stayed close to the fire...
