    Narrow body gathered end?

Has anyone researched what the narrowest width a gathered end hammock body could be before it becomes useless or so restrictive that its not worth the trouble?
I figure the length of the hammock body would affect the comfort as well, but I'm curious if anyone has tried making a narrow hammock.

    Re: Narrow body gathered end?

I can't stand narrow hammocks. I like them to be 60 inches or wider. but it really is just a preference thing. some people do just fine with narrow hammocks. once I made myself a hammock I never wanted to go back to my Hennessy again. Lol

Been sleeping outside for a month now in Maine where the sun, birds and Red Squirrels like to get up around 5:00am. This allows me some time to just lay there and contemplate. Recently found that some of the sunlight could be blocked with the excess fabric of the hammock. Which led me to recall MADD777's discussion on narrow hammocks. Which led me to the decision to climb into the hammock when I get back to Florida and have my wife remove all of the excess fabric. Which might be a total failure or maybe just more proof of the Laws of Gravity. Laying there trying to visualize what would be left just leads to more determination to cut up a perfectly good DIY Hammock. Kinda thinking a lopsided hourglass shape?

Thought I had MADD's thread saved but guess not.

I like narrow hammocks better. I cannot stand the floppy sides. 55-57 inches wide is good for me.

Really personal preference. I also enjoy a wider hammock but do use the knotty mod to control the extra fabric

I think the Claytors are only about 48" wide. Some of us love them, others not so much.

I have a gathered end DIY that is 54" wide and it feels great. It has knotty mods on all four corners. I'm a woman w/o broad shoulders, though. I recently made a new gathered end hammock, (thanks, Xtrekker) and it is 65" wide and a heavier fabric, and I gotta admit, it is more comfortable. I was camping with a friend 2 weeks ago in Wilson's Creek and his Eno ripped all up, and we ended up both sleeping in the 65" hammock. I won't say it was comfortable, but it was tolerable enough that we both were able to sleep.
