    Question Hybrid Tarp Idea...

What do you guys think of making a tarp which would be a combination of an Ultra combined with a Speer 12x10 (one side Speer copy one side Ultra)

Can anyone for see any issues with such a tarp?

I was thinking that such a hybrid hammock would have the best of both worlds, weight savings of the Ultra and weather performance of the Speer.

The only catch would be that the user would always have to try and face the Speer side towards where the weather would be coming from for best results.

One other idea would be to do half/half the other way. Also with this design maybe one could pull the hammock close to the speer side with its closed doors and on the other side you'd have the exit with the ultra's massive cat cut.

So you are saying just doors on one end of the tarp instaed or doors on both ends??

I think it would work great. I've thought of a few things like that myself. All the cottage guys had better be glad I can't sew.

There is a hammock under the Ultra in the picture above.

Well the way I was thinking there are two ways you could make a hybrid ultra/speer. One would be half speer and half ultra along the ridge line (as in for example cutting both tarps in half along the ridge line and then sowing them together). The other would be half speer and half ultra from somewhere somewhere in the middle of tarp going lengthwise.

I'm not sure which way of doing it would be best or if ether one is a good idea....

P.S. i would never cut up two perfectly good tarps, but if enough folks think its a good idea I might ask Brian to sow me one which would be my first tarp. 8)

To me the idea seems sort of silly - the weight difference would be tiny, and the speer winter tarp would be more versatile, if that's what you're after. You can always convert one or both sides of the SWT into a normal hex-style tarp, by tying the outer two tieouts together. See this picture from Youngblood:

That's what I do on my tarp (which the OP used a picture of).

Raw in your first photo do you think you would be able bring the two end down while remaining in porch mode during lighter winds and rain without problems with the poles?

Yep. I've done it a few times. Seemed to work out just fine.

I've dropped the two flaps down, while keeping the middle points up on the poles. Sometimes I have to shorten the hiking poles a bit to get the flaps as low as I want them.

Raw, are those lines you have on the 4 corners that are tied together, the same lines you use to stake the corners out? (i'm assuming yes but i wanted to make sure)

Also and tips for tieing them together?

    Yep, same lines.

I usually just leave one corner coiled. Then I take the line from the other corner and run it through the opposite corner's d-ring then back to itself with a taut-line hitch.
