First Hammock Camping Trip = Success

Hello, I have never posted here, but I got all the info for my hammock camping experience here. Even made my own bug net.

I went on a 50 mile kayak trip and hammock camped on the way down. The first night I realized my homemade bug net was not going to work. The bugs just got trapped inside of it. But I had sprayed my hammock with permethrin and the bugs stayed very far away. The first night a raccoon was crawling around under and and kinda freaked me out. The second night I slept great. I hung a regular tarp over the hammock, used paracord with figure 9's for the stakes and nite ize camjam for the ridgeline. I am not good at knots. It rained for a little big and I stayed 100% dry.
I am a stomach/side sleeper. The first night I didnt hang it well enough to sleep on anything but my back, but the second night I tossed and turned as usual and woke up several times on my stomach completely comfortable. The only thing I didnt have and need is a hammock pillow.

Thanks for all the info I found on this site. I am definietly hooked on hammock camping

Sounds like you've made a good start! My first hang was in the back yard, wrestling with a sleeping pad -- not a good night's sleep at all.

I'd love to go kayaking again. Sounds like you had a great trip.

Sounds like a great trip. Thanks for sharing but be careful. Hammock hanging is addictive and there is no cure!

Glad you had a great trip!

I tried using a rolled up fleece sweater for a pillow and wasn't happy. Then, I bought a small stuff sack that's lined with fleece so you can turn it inside out, stuff some soft clothing inside, then use it as a pillow. Better, but still not the greatest. I recently saw a sale on the Grand Trunk Travel Pillow and bought one. A neat feature is a perimeter draw cord that lets you adjust the firmness of the pillow. Very cool! I tried it out a couple of nights ago and it's wonderful (although a bit bulky/heavy).

Get a pillow and sleep better!

    Take it easy,
