Thinking of finally making the purchase

The trick to keeping the material out of your face with the ENO is to get a pretty wide diagonal lay and sleep with your head kind of close to the edge, that has worked well for me anywaze, once you find the sweet spot their pretty comfy, I had a few questionable nights in mine that had me reconsidering the whole hammock sleeping thing, but I just kept playing with it, it's a trial and error thing, good luck and happy hanging.

I can get the ENO gear for half the cost of the Clark. Am I really sacrifices quality? And I am wondering if I should just drop the cash on the Clark??? But if the ENO works than why not.......to many decisions.................

I had no issues with the quality of my ENO gear. I changed gear because of the weight. I still have most of my ENO gear just in case a new person wants to try Hammock Camping out.

I would recommend checking out Butt In A Sling (BIAS) weight weenie with a notty mod for a foot box and a whoopie suspension. It is a relatively cheap hammock that is really comfortable and plenty light enough for hiking...a good intro hammock before you start shelling out the big bucks.

The eno bug nets are hot, feels very stuffy and no air seems to flow through. Skeeter nets are easy to make and to buy material will be much cheaper. If it was me, this is of course if you can run a sewing machine would be to by a table cloth hammock order some whoopie slings and tree straps and make your own bug net then buy a decent tarp with the money you saved and what you were already planning to spend on the tarp. Just my .2 cents

You could save quite a bit of money by making your own hammock which is probably one of the easiest things you can DIY.

Another thing that would save some money (and weight) would be making your own tree straps from some 1" polyester webbing.

The dry fly is alright but I'm not really a fan of the design and its coverage or having 6 tie-outs, but I honestly think warbonnet makes much better tarps for the price. Arrowhead also makes a really nice tarp in the toxaway. You may also want to consider some of the suspension options Arrowhead has available as well.

I went back and looked at warbonnet hammocks, not sure how I missed these guys. It appears that on the Blackbird that pretty much everything is in one nice deployable package. I would need a tarp but besides that it looks like everything is there.

What or why is there a double layer?

At this point I am not interested in making my own stuff, in time maybe but not now.

A double layer can serve a few purposes. The main, to put a pad between them. If you have the pad on top of the hammock it will slide around, bunch up, etc. the double layer also prevents mosquitos from biting your back-side if you aren't using a pad or underquilt. It can also increase the weight compacity of the hammock.
