    Smile First Scout Summer Camp

I just did my first week at Scout camp with a hammock. This was my longest time in a hammock- a whole week. The other scoutmasters kept bugging me all week to come to my senses and go sleep in a tent like a civilized person. "Your going to actually sleep in that? All night?" It was weird that they were never getting a good night sleep though.

We had bad storms for 3 days and nights and my tarp had a tiny leak and would drip on my every 5 minutes. That didn't keep me awake too much. I did find that silnylon will mist when it rains hard enough.

I have quite a few scouts that want hammocks now and one parent wanted plans for my DIY tarp.

They sold the ultralites for $24.00, the scouts jumped all over them.

I usually find them new on eBay for $20 - $25 each. The name might be different but the hammock (fabric, cut, etc.) is identical. I got a group buy from a nice lady in the Bay area and passed the savings along to the youth. Their parents appreciated it as much if not more than the boys did. I also have a new group of scouts to participate in the hammock camping merit badge.
Happy Trails to one and all.

Yep, just got back myself from scout camp. So-Cal is a different place, with ancient oak groves, and few places to hang, so on the cot it was.

Still had fun, but wish I had my hammock.

I'm heading out to scout camp next week, and it will be my first camping trip where I plan on using a hammock. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

We did Camp Hale in eastern Oklahoma this year. I hung the entire trip and loved it.

I went and took a look at your pictures. I find it neat to see other camps. I liked the idea of bicycles in camp, and the photo of the dining hall brought back memories of our dining hall before they made us take down the wood badge flags. How many other troops were at the camp your week? Would you go back? Where is this camp located?

This could turn into a great thread, sorry to highjack it. But this is all about the week at camp.

We were at Firelands Scout Reservation in Wakeman, Ohio. We always go the same week in order to keep our premium campsite for the next year. This year, we only had about 10 Troops, it was Jambo week. This was the lightest camping year they have ever seen. We go back every year. The boys are looking at other places to go, but not for summer camp. We have had Troops from other councils and other states come to our camp in the past.

We are always looking for other places to check out and camp.
