Mystery Webbing - What material

I recently got a large-ish roll of 1" webbing - probably more than 100' - for dirt cheap. I'm wanting to ID the material ...

I know Nylon is stretchy compared to Poly, so I was thinking of taking a section of the webbing, adding some weight (10 lbs or so) to an end and suspending it. I'd wait a while, then measure the length again.

Is this the best way to ID the material? It's the only thing I can think of at the moment.

I'd use a few hundred pounds or....a Fiber Burn Test

Polyester stretches also..And the thinner the strap the more it will stretch. It just doesn't stretch as bad as nylon does. I have some 1200 BS Polyester that stretches quite a bit and one might accidently think it is nylon because of the stretch. The big turn off of nylon is that it will continue to stretch over longer periods of time and significantly more if it becomes wet while under load.

Burn test is the easiest but it can take a certain talent to determine between some results so practice with known fibers first.

Well, I tried doing a burn test....

I can't say the smoke smelled particularly sweet, or of celery, but the melted blobs were definitely black and not grey. Therefore, it looks like I have Poly.

Will have to try some sort of practical test and see how it does.
