Sleeping bag

Great thread as I have often thought of this.

Why not take the zipper out of the sleeping bag, or at least leave 3 feet on the bottom for a foot box? Seems like I wouldnt want a cold zipper touching my side in the middle of the night.

I am hoping to find one that I can tinker with - take the zipper out. Remove the head from the draft tube, and use elastic fabric to attach it to the ends, so I can slide it under my head, while having the body of the sleeping bag on top of me. I have even thought of making the head piece into the shape of an L:, so I would add an additional section of down with a compressible foam backing so have a pillow during side sleeping.

Doing a long term trip with tent and cot and a hammock also. Guess I will try to modify a big bag to be used for both.

Like others have replied, I have down quilts but i still prefer my Montbell down sleeping bag.

It makes no sense but It feels weird with no hood.
